101 North Wacker offers many state of the art fire safety features. Some of these features are listed below and further information is available in the Emergency Procedures handout provided by the Office of the Building.
Fire Resistant Construction Material: The floors are constructed of concrete slab over metal decking. Ceilings are fire resistant mineral fiber. The walls are flame retardant gypsum board installed over metal studs, and the stairwells have “one and one half hour” fire rated door assemblies. Sprinklers: All tenant and public areas of the building are protected by ceiling mounted automatic sprinklers that are heat activated. Smoke Detectors: The following areas of the building are also protected by smoke detectors: Commonwealth Edison vaults, main and satellite electrical closets, mechanical and elevator machine rooms. Fire Extinguishers: Fire extinguishers are located throughout the building’s common areas, stairwells, inside cabinets marked “Fire Extinguisher”. Also, fire extinguishers are wall mounted throughout the tenant spaces. Learn the locations of the fire extinguishers on your floor. Smoke Exhaust: When a fire alarm monitoring device is activated the system servicing each floor goes into “fire mode” or full supply and full exhaust. If smoke reaches the return fan duct detector, it shuts down the supply fan. If it reaches the supply fan duct detector it shuts off all fans. Stairwells: The building contains two emergency evacuation stairwells stairwell W, located on the west side of the floor and stairwell E, located on the east side of the floor that lead to the ground level. Please see the following page which highlights these stairwells. Once you have entered either of these stairwells you cannot exit the stairwell until you have reached the first floor main lobby. It is very important that all stairwell doors be kept closed at all times unless they are being used for an evacuation. Even then, they should be closed as soon as the last person has evacuated the floor. Emergency telephones are located every five floors in the stairwells. These may be used to report directly to the Fire Command Center behind the lobby security desk. The phones are restricted for emergency use only. Emergency speakers are installed within the stairwells enabling the evacuees to be apprised of any information relevant to the emergency. Stairwell doors employ electric strikeplates which automatically release during an alarm condition. This will allow you to egress or switch stairwells on any floor should that be necessary. SPECIAL NOTE: At all times other than in an alarm condition, the stairwell doors are locked on the inside. Therefore, once a stairwell has been entered the only egress is at the Lobby level. |
